Hi. I’m Nikki Hinkle.
Anderson Mill is “where community matters.” This neighborhood means a lot to me and my family. I am proud that we have chosen to raise our children in this community and around the best people in Austin. I would be honored to be elected to serve this board as it makes its way into the future.
I have lived in Anderson Mill for 18 years with my husband, CW. We have three children, ages 12, 10 and 8. They attend Purple Sage Elementary and Grisham Middle School.
A Foundation Built on Education
My background is in elementary education, and I graduated from Southwest Texas (now Texas State) in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree. I worked in AISD as an elementary teacher for eight years, before leaving the profession to become a mother.
Being an educator in AISD taught me so much about governmental oversight and how it impacts the outcomes of the people.
I was fortunate to be a pioneer educator at Lucy Read Pre-K Demonstration School, which AISD used for developing and showcasing best practices. It was a hotspot for all politicians, school board members, superintendents, universities and TEA representatives. I served on various committees and leadership groups in this school to develop best practices, such as selecting the curriculum for the district and creating a school wide behavior program.
This is also where I learned so much about budgets, rules, guidelines, laws, developing effective practices, sharing ideas and listening to others. I know that the skills I learned at AISD make me want to continue to make an impact in my own community.
Communty Matters
I joined the PTA when my oldest child entered Purple Sage Elementary and I served as the PTA treasurer from 2018-2020. I was voted in again to be the treasurer in 2022 and will finish out my second term in May 2024. I love being a member of the PTA because of the direct impact it has on the school community. It has given me an opportunity to get to know and work with the other parents in our neighborhood.
I have been part of the Girl Scouts for over seven years and I also volunteer with the Baracudas summer league swim team for many years.
Getting Involved
I began regularly attending the AMLD board meetings last June. I have learned a lot about the history of AMLD and have also been there to witness some of the plans for its future. Over the past 18 months, I have also begun to recognize the great many challenges that our neighborhood has been facing.
We need to get back to the promises that were made to the residents in 2009. The pools need to get back to running 7 days a week. We need to get a trash contract that includes recycling picked up every week. There needs to be an overhaul on the communication between the board and their constituents. I also want to get teen programming for our neighborhood. We offer opportunities to connect with the community for every age except for teenagers.
I believe that all these are possible in the next four years and I will work hard to see them happen.
